Keeping the Wii Equipment Clean

Keeping the Wii Clean Equipment and the hygiene surrounding its use, is always a priority when equipment is used regularly, or by a few different people, especially if skin is broken due to surgery.

Below is a selection of ideas as to how the controllers and console can be looked after and kept clean.

Use covers on the controllers
- The WiiMote now comes with a protection cover, although this is to prevent it from being damaged or damaging items if it comes out of the users hand. It also doubles to reduce the amount of dirt getting into the edges of the controller. Unfortunately the buttons are still exposed so dirt can still get trapped. The covers can be completely removed for washing. How regularly you do this will depend on how dirty (or sweaty) the controller gets. The Nunchuk doesn't come with a cover but you can purchase them separately (search google for 'Nunchuk cover').

Wash the controllers
- The controllers do tolerate being wiped, with either an alcohol wipe or warm soapy water. There is no evidence supporting this though, so this advice does not come with a guarantee! Whilst cleaning be careful not to submerse the controllers in water or allow moisture into the gaps between the buttons.

Replace the covers
- You can also purchase additional WiiMote covers, which if you buy as different colours can help to either a)identify WiiMotes if you have more than 1 or b)be swapped each time the WiiMote is cleaned and it is easy to identify how long the cover has been on for.

Replace WiiMote straps
- The straps on the WiiMote get visibly dirty and discoloured, especially when the controllers are in frequent use. They can either be removed from the controller and washed, or completely replaced with new ones that you can buy shops. The strap is a necessity on the WiiMote and should be worn at all times to prevent the controller from flying out of the users hand and causing damage.

Use a Cover for the Wii Fit
- Similar to the WiiMote sleeve/cover the fit board also has a cover that you can purchase separately (it does not come with one). It is suggested that the fit board is used in bare feet, which can be difficult for some patients who rely on footwear to aid their balance and stability. When wearing shoes the boards become noticeably dirty and therefore a cover is a valuable accessory. Some covers that you can buy conveniently have feet printed, to help the user know where to position feet.

Wipe the controllers regularly
- The controllers do tolerate being wiped, with either an alcohol wipe or warm soapy water. There is no evidence supporting this though, so this advice does not come with a guarantee! Whilst cleaning be careful not to submerse the controllers in water or allow moisture into the gaps between the buttons.

Wear gloves when using the controllers
- Those using the WiiMote with a known infection, skin condition or other complication could be encouraged to wear gloves when using the controllers. Although this is only necessary if you feel that the steps taken to wash the controllers will not allow a thorough or suitable clean.
