Improving Cardiovascular Fitness using the Nintendo Wii
The Wii Fit game has an option for running. The WiiMote is placed in the pocket of the user, or just held, and detects motion as the user runs. There are set distances around courses with the WiiMote detecting increases and decreases in speed. Whilst this aspect of the game doesn't use the Wii Board it is part of Wii Fit and does rely on lower limb ability to work the heart and lungs.
Games requiring gross control and repetitive movements offer the opportunity for users to increase heart rate and circulation. This is equally possible when using splints (to attach the controllers to the forearms) for those who are unable to grip the controllers and who find using fitness equipment difficult or inaccessible. Examples of games requiring repetitive movements include Wii Sports Boxing, Wii Fit Running and Mario and Sonic Olympic Games Running and Swimming.
Games: There are a good selection of games available, with games lending themselves to cardiovascular work that use both the Wii Fit Balance Board and the Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers.
